Christmas in Barbados

I wanted to share some photos from our Christmas celebration in Barbados. Having never been there at this magical time of year, we weren't sure what to expect. But, in true Bajan (&Dad) style, we were not disappointed.

We stay at my Dad's condo while we're there. When you walk in the front door, this is the view you are greeted with:

Not exactly a bad way to start your vacation.

Dad had all his holiday decorations out, including his collection of nutcrackers:

Decorations definitely made it feel more "Christmas-y"... even though it was 86 degrees out.

A real Christmas tree costs a couple hundred dollars in Barbados, but I thought his little fake one looked real enough to me!

The sunset was beautiful, as always.

Our gifts had both a Bajan and French-Canadian flare to them. This little lady bug chocolate is apparently very popular in France.

Happy New Year!

Happy new year, my lovely blog readers!

We had a wonderful time in Barbados. It was sunny & relaxing & great to be with family & friends. I'm still sorting through photos of our trip, but in the meantime, here's a spirited new year's greeting right from Crystal Beach.

2010 was an awesome year. We traveled so much, to places I had only dreamed about & to places I once called home. Below are some of my favorite images of the year. We are off to Barbados tomorrow, to spend Christmas with my family.

New York City at Christmas

It hit me like a ton of bricks. I was sitting at my desk this morning, when suddenly the urge came.

New York City.

Christmastime.

I simply must go.

Unfortunately, New York City, especially at Christmastime, is expensive & our holiday schedule is already jammed.

So since a trip isn't in the picture this year, I thought I would blog about it instead. Enjoy!

the Topiary Garden

While we were in Ohio for Thanksgiving, I made Brad take a detour by Topiary Park in Columbus. He had never seen it before, & since it is one of my favorite places in the city, we simply had to stop.

Topiary Park is a privately funded park on the grounds of the former Ohio School for the Deaf (a magnificent building), just east of downtown. The park features a topiary interpretation of George Seurat’s famous painting "A Sunday Afternoon on the Isle of La Grande Jatte." It is amazing how much the topiary have grown in the five years since I left Columbus; you can really see the painting now.

This is the real painting - it's massive. It's breathtaking. It's genius. It's beautiful. It hangs in the Art Institute of Chicago. I could have sat there all day & looked at it:
